Music Professor Featured on South Korean Television

Professor of Music Kent Lyman was featured in a recent segment on South Korean television station called YTN. Lyman attracted the interest of the station during visits to South Korea and the piece, which was filmed before pandemic restrictions, covered some of the connections between North Carolina and Korea. The feature was broadcast nationwide in Korea in August.聽 Kent Lyman smiling.

In the segment, Lyman is shown teaching the song Jindo Arirang to a student in an arrangement by the composer Park Young-ran. Lyman said that he first encountered Korean music when he visited Korea as a missionary 40 years ago. After that, he studied various genres of Korean music, from popular songs to traditional music, has performed many concerts, and taught many students in Korea.

鈥淜orean music is very fun for me because it has a very special melody and rhythm. It’s a little different from classical music,鈥 Lyman said. 鈥淚 haven’t officially studied Korean music in Korea, but have pursued it as a special interest.鈥
