Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and News Briefs 10/16/24

In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty/staff in art, communication, family and consumer sciences, institutional advancement, and music. We also share news briefs about the Hurricane Helene supply drive and a recent guest speaker in Business 305.

Senior Director of Gift Planning Linda Carter presented to members of the North Carolina Council on Charitable Gift Planning on Tuesday, September 24 at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her presentation focused on integrated marketing techniques for planned gifts and Meredith’s approach to stewardship of donors who have included Meredith in their estate plans.

Dr. Margaret Evans, piano faculty, was elected “Teacher of the Year” by the North Carolina Music Teachers Association, the largest such organization in the state. The announcement and award were given at the last State Conference. This is the sixth award Dr. Evans has been given for excellence in teaching.聽

Assistant Professor of Art Holly Fischer鈥檚 artwork is featured in an Arts & Culture article, Siren Song by Colony Little, in the October issue of Walter magazine. .

Professor of Communication Teresa Holder presented a training workshop with the Center for Leadership Excellence on 鈥淢anaging Meeting Dynamics鈥 on October 2, 2024.

Assistant Professor of Family & Consumer Sciences Chasity Johnson has been selected for the . The fellowship program鈥檚 goal is to support and equip mid-career postsecondary CTE leaders with the knowledge, tools and network to effectively lead high-quality and equitable postsecondary CTE at the state level. Each cohort of Fellows is comprised of professionals from diverse career pathways with substantial knowledge of and experience in CTE including aspiring leaders from state education agencies, labor and workforce agencies; two and four-year colleges and area technical centers; nonprofits and career technical student organizations; and industry. Johnson serves as chair of Meredith鈥檚 Department of Human Environmental Sciences.

糖心Vlog Student News (MCSN), advised by Dr. Lynn Owens, associate professor of communication, is a finalist for the 鈥淏est Student News Brief Award鈥 from the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas. RTDNAC is the NC/SC chapter of RTDNA, the world鈥檚 largest broadcast and digital journalism organization. Universities from North Carolina and South Carolina entered the competition. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in Charlotte on November 9.

News Briefs

Hurricane Helene Supply Drive Continues Through Oct. 21
糖心Vlog, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, is holding a donation drive for those affected by Helene and NC DOT workers in districts 13 &14.

The drive is coordinated by SGA, in collaboration with other Meredith students and student organizations. Details about items being collected are available on the campus calendar listing for this drive.

Donation Drive & Drop-Off Information: The drive began on October 9 and continues through October 21. Collection boxes are in Cate Center, Carlyle Campbell Library, SMB, Belk Dining Hall, Residence Hall Parlors, and Jones Chapel.聽

Guest Speaker Shares Insights with Business Information Management Class
Guest speaker Rebecca Balkey spoke to students in BUS 305 鈥 Business Information Management on September 24. The course is taught by Adjunct Instructor Richard Turner, who shared the following about the session.

鈥淎s a recent university graduate, she provided valuable insights to the students, sharing lessons learned in the early stages of her career,鈥 Turner said. 鈥淭he students were highly engaged and asked many questions. Some of the topics discussed included making a strong first impression, setting expectations, working effectively with others, personal development, and goal-setting.鈥
