In this issue, we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty/staff in art, child development, college programs, education, English, interior design, marketing, nutrition, psychology, and residence life. We also share news about the Campus Store Holiday Sale and the 糖心Vlog Employee Satisfaction Survey.

Assistant Dean of Students Daphne Davis has been selected to serve on the 2025 NASPA Excellence Awards Review Committee, contributing to the recognition of outstanding programs in student affairs and higher education. She was also invited by the Council for Opportunity in Education to present a webinar for First Generation Professionals, focusing on strategies for achieving success and effectiveness in the professional landscape.

Assistant Professor of Art Holly Fischer was the guest artist speaker at the 11th Annual (BEAS) Luncheon at Raleigh鈥檚 Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) on November 15.聽

Education Department faculty members Andrew Garbisch and Monica McKinney presented their paper 鈥淩eimagining Sense-of-Home in Classroom Contexts鈥� at the annual meeting of the American Educational Studies Association in Greenville, S.C.

Residence Director Madissen Keys, a graduate student in Meredith’s I-O Psychology program, presented her research poster at the 20th Annual River Cities I-O (RCIO) Psychology Conference on November 8-9 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Her poster, 鈥淯nderstanding Boreout: A New Measure of Employee Well-Being,鈥� focused on the development and validation of a new scale for assessing boreout, which is a state of disengagement and underutilization in the workplace that can negatively impact employee and organizational well-being.

Dr Andrea McPherson (Psychology and Social Work) was an invited panelist for Duke University’s Anti-Racism community program on September 20. The colloquium was titled “Exploring Teaching Careers in Psychology and Neuroscience: A Panel Discussion” and was presented to current Duke graduate students, post docs, and faculty.聽

Composition and Creative Writing Instructor Jason Newport鈥檚 short story聽 “Tomorrow We’ll Be There” has appeared in the Chautauqua literary journal’s 2024 print issue 21.2 Rooted and Growing.

Videographer and Multimedia Designer Zorah Olivia was selected as a finalist in ViewSonic鈥檚 Fifth ColorPro Awards. Her photo, 鈥淢argielyn Didal, Olympic Skateboarder, Heelflip in New Orleans,鈥� was selected out of more than 8,600 entries and will be included in an upcoming exhibition in Germany.

Cathie Ostrowski, Director of the Dietetic Internship Program and Assistant Professor of Practice in Food and Nutrition, presented a poster at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Conference in Minneapolis in October. The poster鈥檚 title was: 鈥淭iming of Enteral Nutrition in Critically Ill Patients on Vasopressor Support:聽 A Systematic Review.鈥�

Interior Design Instructor Cara Phillips, RID, IIDA, NCIDQ, presented her MFA in Design Thinking thesis research on 鈥淭he Education of Soft Skills: Collaboration, Communication, and Empathy鈥� at the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Virtual Symposium on November 1. Presentation description: Educators are saying since COVID-19 students鈥� amount of soft skills have decreased. Professionals are saying students are graduating without enough soft skills. How can we as educators increase the amount of soft skill training we teach our students?

Assistant Professor of Child Development and the Birth-Kindergarten Teaching License Program Coordinator Amy Scrinzi is the co-editor of the new book, Focus on Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Equitable and Joyful Learning in Kindergarten, published by the National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC). This book highlights how kindergarten educators provide integrated learning opportunities that can be adapted to create a robust learning environment that is play oriented and supportive of required mandates and expectations. It is organized around the six guidelines of developmentally appropriate practice and highlights how educators make international decisions in key areas of practice. Dr. Scrinzi also co-presented a day-long pre-conference session as well as a general conference session at the November 2024 NAEYC Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., unveiling the new book.聽 These sessions were designed to dive deep into the key areas of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, exploring how to create environments and experiences that honor the unique developmental needs of kindergarten-aged children.聽

糖心Vlog Employee Satisfaction Survey
Meredith employees, please be on the lookout for an email invitation to participate in an Employee Satisfaction Survey about aspects of your employment at 糖心Vlog. The last time a similar survey was done was in 2018. This survey has been developed by a committee composed of representatives from Staff Affairs, Faculty Council, Human Resources, the Office of Research, Planning and Assessment, and the Coordinator of Campus Community and Culture. The survey is open to all Meredith Employees.

The survey is completely anonymous and no names can be linked to any response. Results will be reported in aggregate to relevant campus leadership. The survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete and will be best viewed on a computer screen. You have the option to print and return the survey, or to complete it online.
