Residential students should contact the Residence Life Critical Response Team at (919) 612-6350 for after-hours instructions. For information regarding after-hours care, please see “What to do when the Student Health Center is closed?“.
The Center has partnered with Residence Life, Dining Services, Housekeeping, and other campus departments to provide support for students who are unable to return home due to illness and require an on-campus isolation space.
Health fees cover the costs of physician and nursing services rendered in the Center. The student health fee is included in the residence room and board fees paid by students living in the residence halls. Oaks apartment residents and commuter students must pay the Health Center fee, $100 per semester, to receive services.
Some prescriptions, x-rays, laboratory tests, the Gyn-Clinic, student-teacher physicals, emergency room fees, and consultations with physicians off-campus must be paid for by the student.
Students living in the Oaks or commuting may apply for funds to cover this cost through Financial Aid or contact the Chaplain’s office for funding assistance.
The Center is located on the first floor of the Student Health and Wellness Building between Belk Dining Hall and Martin Hall.
The Center does not provide written excuses to students to miss class. Students that are seen by outside providers that provide excuse notes should send that documentation to the Dean of Students. The Dean of Students will notify professors if a student needs to be out of class for a period of time due to a related illness or injury. Ultimately it is up to the individual professor to determine whether or not an absence is excused.Â
College health professionals are bound to adhere to strict ethical and legal standards including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). As such, nothing shared in a confidential setting will be shared outside of the office without the student’s written consent. In an effort to provide the highest quality care, a provider may find it necessary to consult with other clinical staff in the Student Health and Wellness Center.Â
Our office cannot disclose names or other identifying information to any person, including family or other college officials, without the student’s consent. In certain cases health professionals have a legal responsibility to disclose student information without prior consent. These cases include when a student poses a threat to themselves or others, possible child or elder abuse/neglect, or when issued a court order by a judge.Â
Student health records are kept separate from other FERPA protected academic records.Â
