Our Graduate Programs in Education

Meredith believes strong teachers change lives. We have a long history of creating talented educators who positively impact students. Our coeducational programs ensure teachers are prepared to lead and serve in the broader community. 

We offer three different graduate programs in education: a Master of Education, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and post-baccalaureate licensure. Licensure through residency, licensure only, and add-on licensure are available as well.

Concentrations: Elementary education, English as a second language, Literacy, Special education

  • Our M.Ed. is for licensed K-12 teachers who wish to deepen their knowledge and prepare for a new role in education.
  • An M.Ed. prepares students for leadership positions within schools or school systems.
  • Classes blend in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Courses are scheduled from 5 – 7:50 p.m. in the fall and spring semesters and 5 – 8:30 p.m. in the summer session. Classes meet once weekly during the school year and twice weekly in the summer.
  • The program is 30-33 credit hours, and the average time to complete the degree is 2.5 years.

  • Our M.A.T. is for those who do not hold a teaching license but want to become a teacher. It is also for those who are pursuing licensure through residency
  • The program offers small classes, a collaborative learning environment, and hands-on professional development.
  • Most classes meet in person on Meredith’s campus and are scheduled from 5 – 7:50 p.m. in the fall and spring semesters and 5 – 8:30 p.m. in the summer session. Courses meet once weekly during the school year and twice weekly in the summer.
  • The M.A.T. program is 30-33 credit hours and leads to M-level licensure.

Concentrations: K-12 Art, K-12 Theatre, K-12 Dance, Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) 6-12

  • This licensure option is open to those with an appropriate undergraduate degree or graduates who are approved through a formal review by the designated department.
  • The post-baccalaureate licensure is ideal for residency teachers already teaching these subjects. 
  • It can also benefit someone interested in obtaining their initial license before they start teaching.
  • The post-baccalaureate licensure is 21 credit hours and can be completed in as little as 16 months.
  • Courses are scheduled in the evening.

    • The internship begins with observing and assisting in the classroom, continues with individual student and small group lessons, and builds to full responsibility for planning and instruction.

  • Examples of student success include
    • Abla Awadallah, ’19, pursued her M.A.T. after finding a love of teaching while working with refugees in Palestine. She now works as an English as a second language (ESL) teacher, where she is a voice for her students and hopes to implement better ESL programs nationwide.

Entrance exams (GRE) are not required for admission into the Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Education programs.

Marion Gaeta-Escoto, ’18, was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher by earning her Master of Arts in Teaching at ÌÇÐÄVlog. In the future, she hopes to return to Meredith as a professor to inspire a new generation of teachers.

At Meredith, Beth Garner, ’14, M.A. in Teaching, found flexibility, guidance, and financial support through a FELS grant to achieve her goal of becoming an ESL teacher.
