The Cate Center opened its doors in 1972. Kresge Auditorium, the post office, and the book store were located on the first floor while spaces for student activities were placed on the second floor. A $400,000 gift from Kemp Shields Cate, whose great niece and niece attended Meredith, named the Cate Center and his contribution was supplemented by grants from the Kresge Foundation and Z. Smith Reynolds.
°Õ³ó±ðÌýKresge Auditorium refurbishment project began in June 2018 and was completed in January 2019. One of the major upgrades this project brought was increased accessibility, including expanded accessible seating and improved auditorium entrances.
