MLK Week of Service, Reflection, and Action
January 17, 2023 @ 8:00 am - January 22, 2023 @ 5:00 pm
- Tuesday, January 17th, 12pm-1:30pm in the Chapel: Kick-off to start with the Office of the Chaplain’s event in the Chapel — excerpts of MLK’s speeches and sermons will be read.
- Wednesday 18th all day: Self-guided Contemplative Walk for Justice. Students come to SLS to get a page of inspirational words of King and others who were instrumental in righting the wrongs of the past. Walking the suggested path within the Meredith mall, students can reflect on the legacy of King and others, and consider what wrongs are being perpetrated today. They’ll be encouraged to ponder what they can do to promote change and support Racial, Economic, and Restorative Justice efforts.
- Thursday 19th: Students can participate in On-Campus Acts of Service/service project opportunities throughout the day! Students can contact Dr. McMillen to register to garden in the Dickson Foundation Community Garden and/or come to the SLS office to write notes of encouragement to elderly residents of local memory care facilities and help assemble homeless care kits.
- Friday 20th 10am 214 Harris: Panel discussion and reflection.
- Saturday 21st: Off-campus, student-initiated service projects are encouraged.
- Sunday 22nd 3pm in Kresge: Film screening of a Pauli Murray documentary sponsored by the Vlog Documentary Film Festival and Dr. Alisa Johnson in the English Department.
- Wednesday, Feb 1st 10am Kresge: “Call to Action Celebration!” Leaders with Urban Community AgriNomics will speak, and students who engaged in at least 3 of the six “Week of” events will be entered into a drawing for the “Service Swag.” The guest speakers will be sisters Delphine Godley Sellars and Lucille Godley Patterson, who will speak about the 501(c)3 nonprofit they founded in 2016: (UCAN) and issue a call to action as a kick-off to Black History Month. UCAN was founded on a reclaimed former plantation, with a mission to improve the health and wellness of the community and provide education, resources, and agricultural skills. UCAN addresses food insecurities, racial and economic disparities, and utilizes sustainable agriculture in order to:
- Create opportunities for all people to have equal access to fresh produce and the knowledge of how to grow it themselves.
- Honor and respect the environment.
- Educate individuals in how to create gardens; especially for communities that have limited green spaces.
- Cultivate safe community spaces where residents come together to build relationships around agriculture.
- Collaborate long term relationships based on trust and inclusion.
